Sharing your legacy with a new generation…
Throughout the history of the United
States, millions of men and women have served our country with distinction
and honor. The main goals of the U. S. Veterans Legacy Project are:
to provide our veterans the means
to pass on their legacy to a new generation
to provide the opportunity for
students to learn, through first hand veteran accounts, what it was
like to serve our great country
We are dedicated to preserving as
many individual remembrances as possible and we honor the legacy of all
veterans through this project. We hope that students and the general
public will learn the true meaning of service by sharing and participating
in our activities.
The main components of the U. S. Veterans
Legacy Project are the Speakers Bureau, the Oral History Project/Veterans
Survey, the Flag Exchange Ceremony, and the annual Delaware County Veterans
Day Parade. Please use the menu above to learn more about
these programs.

Flag Exchange.
The idea of the Flag Exchange Ceremony was conceived back in 1991 as
a way to welcome home veterans of the Persian Gulf War. Over the years,
the Flag Exchange has been revised and is now used as a symbolic passing
on of a veteran's legacy to a new generation.
Last year, during the Delaware County Veterans Day Parade, hundreds of
grandfathers, fathers, mothers, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, daughters,
sons, granddaughters, grandsons, and friends participated in the ceremony.
The veterans and recipients stood in front of the parade review stand.
The veteran handed the recipient both an American Flag and a POW flag.
The recipient accepted the gift and in some cases reciprocated with a
note or flower. Most answered with hugs, handshakes, and more than a few
tears. In passing on the flags, the veterans were figuratively passing
on their legacy to a new generation.
The Flag Exchange is a symbolic gesture, but serves as an important step
in opening the dialogue between generations so that children and teens
may learn and remember the important contributions that older generations
have made through their service.

There are many ways that you can bring the U.S. Veterans Legacy Project into your home or classroom. Parents, teachers and students will find valuable information and ideas for school projects in many of the educational Website listed on the "Links" page shown on the left. Our primary goals are for veterans to share their legacy with a new generation and for children and teens to learn through first hand accounts what it was like to serve our country. These goals may be attained in many ways - but the common denominators are education and conversation. As parents and educators you will be able to determine age-appropriate activities for your children. We welcome suggestions and ideas that you have found successful in your home or school.
Please let us know about your successful classroom projects - we would like to share them with others via this Website.
Parents and teachers, please review web site and links usage with
your children. Some sites contain links to uncensored memories of
war which may be considered too graphic for your child. U.S.

listed sites. Should you find any problems with the links, please
contact the Webmaster.
Please find listed below some educational and informative web
sites that we hope will help you in learning more about the history

down to us through generations of service and sacrifice. Most
of these sites contain links to additional educational resources.
An integral part of the U.S. Veterans
Legacy Project is the Speakers Bureau, which brings veterans into the
classroom to share their first-hand remembrances with students throughout
the area. The Speakers Bureau is available throughout the school year.
The U.S. Veterans Legacy Project
is currently seeking additional veterans to participate in this important
program and we are always happy to make the arrangements to accommodate
the needs of your school or classroom.
